How to make AeroPress coffee

By the Lavazza Team 2–3 minutes

Nowadays, coffee-lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to the variety of methods to make their daily cup of coffee. From the classic Italian espresso machine to the pour-over method favored by many Americans, the French Press and beyond, each produces a different depth of flavor. One of the newer popular ways to make coffee is with an AeroPress.

What is AeroPress coffee?

The AeroPress coffee maker was only invented in the last 20 years, by Alan Adler. It is a manual coffee maker which uses a cylindrical chamber and plunger mechanism, similar to a syringe, to produce espresso-style coffee. Ground coffee and water are brewed inside and then forced through a filter to produce coffee.

How to make AeroPress Coffee

To make one cup of coffee using an AeroPress, you will need:

Equipment

  • A coffee scale (optional)
  • AeroPress coffee maker
  • Kettle
  • A coffee scoop
  • A large, sturdy mug or AeroPress glass
  • Filter paper

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Step 1. Boil the water using a kettle
  2. Step 2. Take one of the filter papers and put it into the cap of the AeroPress. Rinse the filter with hot water before brewing
  3. Step 3. Attach the filter cap to the bottom of the brewing chamber
  4. Step 4. Set the chamber on top of your mug and add one rounded scoop of coffee into it
  5. Step 5. Shake the chamber to level out the coffee
  6. Step 6. Add the boiled water into the chamber until it covers the grounds and stir for around ten seconds
  7. Step 7. Place your plunger into the top of the brew chamber and wait for 40 seconds. Press down gently with steady pressure until you hear a hissing sounds, while your espresso-style coffee is dispensed into your mug
  8. Step 8. Serve and enjoy your AeroPress coffee!

To clean your AeroPress, remove the cap and push the plunger to get rid of the used coffee grounds. Rinse the rubber seal to keep the AeroPress clean. Dry and screw it back onto the cap to store away.

Variants for preparing coffee with AeroPress

In addition to the method explained above, there are a few variables that can alter the type of coffee produced by an AeroPress.

For example, by using a metal filter instead of a paper filter, it allows the oils to pass through for a more full-bodied cup of coffee. The paper filter keeps out the oils, creating a more ‘clean’ flavor profile.

How to make an Americano, latte or cappuccino with the Aeropress

To make an Americano coffee  by using your AeroPress, simply top up the espresso -style coffee with more hot water. Alternatively, you can add foamed or steamed milk into the coffee to make a cappuccino or a latte.
