Excellence with CO₂ emissions offset

Our coffee capsules would not be aligned with our values without consideration for the environment and carbon footprint. This is why Lavazza has reduced emissions along our entire value chain and offsets direct emissions for our capsules.

Now all Lavazza Blue Capsules feature CO₂ emissions offset. Enjoy the Lavazza coffee experience, with the decadent aromas and flavors of our blends, with confidence that CO₂ emissions are offset.

The new Lavazza CO₂ emission offset Capsules

Our carbon neutrality approach begins with reducing emissions along Lavazza's entire value chain. In 2020, we began our journey by offsetting direct emissions and achieving complete CO₂ emissions compensation. This is part of our larger commitment to sustainability, named Blend for Better. It embraces many projects following the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations for 2030 in 4 key areas: Care for the environment, Spin a virtuous cycle, Open up opportunities, and Educate for change.

What does this mean in practice?

Our carbon neutrality approach begins with reducing emissions. As we are conscious that not all emissions can be reduced at once, Lavazza uses carbon offsetting on residual emissions by supporting different projects. We offset our annual carbon emissions in relation to the volumes of capsules sold. For 2022 the amount offset is equal to:

Blue coffee system by Lavazza

318,165,860 km by car

Average transport in a passenger car. The average takes into account internal combustion engines and electric cars, different car classes, different car sizes, and fuel types. For electric cars, only a medium-sized car is taken into account.

183,542 trips Paris–New York per passenger

Trip of 5,849.32 km by long-haul plane at 80% occupancy.

30,458,173 reams of paper produced

One ream of paper is defined as 500 A4 sheets. 75 g/m2, lightweight coated paper; packaging is not considered.

Product Life Cycle

The activities put in place to compensate the CO₂ emissions of Lavazza Blue capsules cover the whole life cycle of the product, from the cultivation of coffee to the end of its life - through all stages of production, transport and disposal.

For CO₂ neutrality, we are on the right road.

Lavazza is one of the world’s top players in the agri-food industry. That is why producing our best quality coffee is just a part of our mission and it would be pointless not to take the way we do this into consideration as well.

Our commitment is doing the best we can to use sustainable resources, ensure fair working lives for coffee growers and, of course, reduce CO₂ emissions in our supply chain Let’s do this together!

Guanaré Forest Restoration Uruguay

The project, certified according to VCS-SC standards, consists of reforesting and restoring degraded grasslands to improve soil quality and biodiversity, while increasing carbon sequestration. In addition, the project is creating a sustainable wood industry, increasing employment opportunities and strengthening the rural economy of Uruguay.

Madre de Dios – Peru

Near ancient Machu Picchu, in the Vilcabamba-Amboró conservation corridor, the construction of an inter-oceanic road linking Brazil to Peru jeopardizes the tropical rainforest and one of the most precious areas for biodiversity in the world. This project, verified according to VCS and CCBA standards, addresses illegal logging and the social threat to the indigenous community, increasing surveillance in the area and establishing sustainable forest management practices.

Kariba – Zimbabwe

Kariba is a VCS-CCBS certified Forest Conservation project with a huge social impact. The purchase of carbon credits safeguards the independence of indigenous communities and improves their well-being. The investments are aimed at enhancing healthcare, infrastructure, education, and agriculture. In particular, with regard to the last area, the activities focus on conservation agriculture, community gardens, training of beekeepers, fire management, and ecotourism, which has a positive effect on the whole region.

Chile: Chacayes Run of River

Opened in October 2011, the award-winning Chacayes run-of-river hydropower plant represents the first stage of Pacific Hydro's project development in the Alto Cachapoal Valley. In 2012, Chacayes successfully registered to issue and trade carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism. The Coya and Pangal run-of-river hydropower plants were Pacific Hydro's first assets in South America, following our arrival in Chile in 2002. Coya and Pangal have been generating clean and renewable energy for Chile for nearly 100 years.
